The Taubman and Public Education

New at the Taubman

We are pleased to collaborate with Roanoke County Schools and local colleges to join Virginia Standards of Learning and core subjects with the arts in the museum setting.

Primary School
Programs and themed tours are designed specifically for students in grades Pre-K through 6th and incorporate the Art Venture interactive center, temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection.

Art and Literacy
Young children in grades Pre-K
and 1st have the opportunity
to connect an artwork from our permanent collection with a relevant story reading, and then create
their own art inspired by what they have learned.

I-Spy Tour
Pre-K students develop their visual skills by making their own pair of
“I Spy” binoculars that they then use to tour the permanent collection, identifying people, places and things.

Fourth Grade Tour Program
Students have the opportunity to discuss a specific work of art from the permanent collection, take a mini-tour and then create their own masterpiece to take home.

Secondary School and College
Cross-curricular middle and high school programs and tours are built around temporary exhibitions, the permanent collection and the unique architecture of the building itself. Similar programs are also available at the collegiate level.

Museum Studies Course
Students attending the zero period art program with Roanoke County schools have the ability to participate in a Museum Studies course taught here in the museum’s facilities. Depending on the students’ secondary grade level, the course curriculum involves designing
and creating their own museum, creating their own podcasts and tours, or curating their own exhibition which will open in Spring 2011.

Access Programs Initiative
We have partnered with social service agencies and other organizations to offer customized programs for children, young adults and adults with special needs. These include Art Venture programs, customized exhibition tours and workshops. Touch tours are also available for visitors who are blind or who have low vision.
